Victorian styled carbon arc lamp. This form of lighting pre-dates incandescent lighting at the turn of the electric age in the start of the 1900s and was even used after the invention of Edison's bulb, as a high discharge form producing large quantities of light using less electricity, for much more than a conventional incandescent.
