ICON OF THE CRUCIFIXION (Walters Art Gallery)
This is a 1 prim (LI = 1) icon based upon an icon of the Crucifixion. It is suitable for use in SL churches, homes, or spiritual sites. The size can be modified by the user to suit the space in which it is to be displayed. It can be copied by the owner but not transferred.
This is one of our decorative “mute” icons, as opposed to our “talking” icons, which display quotes when touched.
ABOUT ICONS
Icons are stylized representations of Christ, the Saints, episodes in Holy History, and other Biblical themes. They are used in devotion by Eastern Orthodox Christians, Oriental Orthodox Christans, and Christians in the Churches of the East. Unlike much Western religious art, they do not aim at realistic depictions, but images that attempt to bring us in touch with spiritual realities. They are sometimes described as “windows into heaven” (hence the name of our brand). They are neither simply works of art nor things to be worshipped as idols, but vehicles through which God can communicate something of the Divine Mysteries to the human soul. As such, the Orthodox view them as sacred objects to be venerated (but, again, not worshipped).
There are icons that depict Christ, the Saints, episodes in the Bible and in Christian history, and other basic Christian themes. These various themes, or MOTIFS, have been painted (or “written”) by many iconographers. The style of many of the motifs is highly stylized, so that there is a great deal of resemblance between, say, different icons of the Crucifixion or Resurrection.
ICONS OF THE CRUCIFIXION
The Crucifixion of Christ, along with His Resurrection, are the central events in Christian sacred history. Christ’s Passion and death are commemorated each year on Good Friday, and images of the crucified Christ occupy central places in the sanctuaries of both Eastern and Western churches. In icons of this motif, Christ is shown crucified, the Centurian’s spear wound already in his side. A small number of faithful are depicted as present at the event. In some icons, this is only Jesus’ mother Mary and John, the disciple he loved. In others, it includes the other faithful women and the Centurian who is by tradition called Longinus — not as Christ’s executioner but as the one who exclaimed, “Surely this man is the Son of God!” Angels are often depicted above the cross, and the sun and the moon darkened.
ABOUT THIS ICON
This is a reproduction of a 16th century Russian icon housed at the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore, MD (USA). A description from the museum’s website reads:
“This delicately painted icon shows Christ's Crucifixion before the walls of Jerusalem. A detail rarely included in Crucifixion scenes is the resurrection of the dead, portrayed here as tightly wrapped corpses, after Matthew 27:52: "The tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised." According to tradition, this resurrection occurred immediately after the blood of Christ had dripped onto Adam's skull which had been buried at Calvary. The back of the panel carries an image of the instruments of the Passion (cross, spear, and reed), surrounded by inscriptions.” https://art.thewalters.org/detail/40760
