Deadly Nightshade is one of the most toxic plants on Earth. It has a long history of use as a medicine, cosmetic and poison. Famed botanist Carl Linnaeus gave the plants its Latin name of Atropa because of its poisonous properties. Atropos (whose name means "unturning one") was one of the Three Fates in Greek mythology. She is said to have cut a person's thread of life after her sisters had spun and measured it.
Although Deadly Nightshade is dangerous, women in the Renaissance era used it to enlarge their pupils, which they thought made them look more beautiful.
And before the modern era, physicians and surgeons used Deadly Nightshade as an anaesthetic.
