Formal Magic was initially devised as a solution to a well-known issue facing Second Life avatars: what to do about the problem of hands reaching into the wide skirts of formal dresses and gowns and breaking the illusion of reality, especially in settings such as weddings and dances. We had experience with specialty AO products aimed at this market, but none of those we tried solved the skirt issue to our satisfaction.

How it works: Formal Magic’s wearable items run specially crafted animations that act as ‘overlays’ to your existing AO. These utilize the animation priority system. They are set at priority 4, which is the highest, and are authored to move only the hands and arms of the avatar. Most AO systems we have tested use priority 3 animations, and allow this to function with no problem. Our animations are not motion capture in origin, but when they are used with a MOCAP AO, the illusion created is almost seamless. And a nice serendipity came when we tested the system with Bento AO’s – the fingers continue to animate despite our overlay!

We have tested the system successfully with various AO’s from major makers. If you are looking to buy a MOCAP AO, be sure to check for the availability of priority 3 animations as an option

It is common for AO’s to use priority 4 animations for walks, and our animations will not override these. However, in formal settings such as weddings, most of the time standing animations will be in use. In our tests we left our animations in place even during dances with no problems, but you should test your application before entering a social setting. In a worst-case situation, simply detach the item or stop the animation with the HUD when dancing. Please be aware that priority 3 or lower walks will be necessary for using the bouquet hold animations in a wedding procession; so do prepare and test them in advance of need.

In this kit you will find a folder of wearable objects, a set of loose animations and a driver script that can be dropped into any modifiable wearable item using the SL object editor, and a simple HUD containing the entire set. This allows you complete flexibility in setting up your situation, including the possibility of adding an animation directly to a problematic gown or dress.

As with all our listings, we stand behind the product and support it. We will fix whatever problems you encounter or return your money if that is not possible.

This is brilliant! Suddenly many basically great AO's can be used even with certain shapes and wide dresses. Also many hand-held attachments can easily be worn. Thank you :)
