The Jack the Ripper Collection

This Victorian exhibit presents objects connected with the Whitechapel murders of 1888. On display are a simple shawl, a pocket watch frozen at a mysterious hour, and a stone block marked with faint chalk writing. At the center lies a well used knife, accompanied by iron handcuffs and a brass police whistle, symbols of the police efforts that never found their quarry.

A gentleman’s top hat completes the scene, recalling the figure so often described in witness statements. Above the case are reproductions of the Dear Boss letter, signed in red ink, and a contemporary newspaper speculating on the killer’s identity.

Taken together, these objects form a display that blends history and legend, a reminder of the fear and fascination that still surround the name Jack the Ripper.
