A dojo is a Japanese term which literally means "place of the Tao". Initially, dojo were adjunct to temples. The term can refer to a formal training place for any of the Japanese do arts but typically it is considered the formal gathering place for students of any Japanese martial arts style to conduct training, examinations and other related encounters. The concept of dojoas a martial arts training place is a Western concept; in Japan, any physical training facility, including professional wrestling schools, may be called dojo depending on the context.
The Kansai region lies in the southern-central region of Japan's main island Honsh. The region includes the prefectures of Nara, Wakayama, Kyoto and Shiga. Sometimes Fukui, Tokushima and Mie are also included. The Kansai region is the cultural and historical heart of Japan with 11% of its land area. The area also contains six of the seven top prefectures. The Kansai region lays claim to the earliest beginnings of Japanese civilization. It was Nara, the most eastern point on the Silk Road, that became the site of Japan's first permanent capital. This period (AD 710-784) saw the spread of Buddhism to Japan in 745. The Kansai region also boasts the Shinto religion's holiest shrine at Ise Shrine (built in 690 AD) in Mie prefecture.
