(12-16-2008) LoD (or Level of Detail) still affects sculpties in SL and some parts of complex sculpted items are known to lose their shape when viewed from certain distances. While care is taken in the making of these sculpties to minimize this problem, sometimes it's a matter of viewer settings.
Increasing the Object Mesh Detail Level under your graphics preferences can help diminish this problem, but what I found really to work is under the "Advanced" menu (hit Ctrl-Alt-D, or Opt-Ctrl-D on a Mac to make it visible), click "Debug Settings..." all the way at the bottom, and type "RenderVolumeLODFactor" all one word. Change the value to 4.000 or 5.000. That should make your sculpties render nicely from greater distances.
