This is a traditional Victorian-Edwardian evening dress outfit, generally worn after 6 pm, for dinner and other social occasions. The gloves were particularly important for balls, since it was considered unacceptable to touch a lady's skin. There was also the problem of leaving marks on their ballgowns. The colours were black (top hat, tailcoat, trousers and shoes) and white (bow tie, shirt, waistcoat and gloves) The white scarf was an Edwardian addition. There was almost no further variation.
