I made this simulated phoropter ophthalmic testing device for those seeking items to support and enhance their SL role play activities.
In RL this device is used to test visual acuity as patient looks through various lenses chosen by the physician and says "better" or "worse" as they report their ability to see letters on an eye chart placed from 10 to 20 feet (or 3 to 6 meters) away.
I based my mesh model on the features of the most widely used phoropters so you can role play various exam scenarios. I also included a mock up of the standard Snellen eye exam chart. It has the standard aspect ratio for the chart and you can use touch to rescale to adjust it to whatever scale you like to support your SL location and role play.
I also modeled the chair on the basic chair style used with this device. It also features touch to rescale should you need to do that.
I made the sit animation specially for this chair in combination with the mesh phoropter model. The patient sits forward with face close to the phoropter. The head and body remain still but I made small hand and foot movements in the animation loop to reflect how patients might move slightly during exam procedures.
Touch the phoropter and it swings forward 80 degrees so the patient can easily sit. Touch the phoropter again and it returns into position close to the face of the patient. Indeed the patient may be able to see through the lens openings depending on their avatar size and position. Familiarity with avatar view controls is helpful in being able to look thru the device. The chair features AVsitter so detailed position changes can also be made just the way you like them.
You can actually simulate eye exams. Phoroter will listen to your chat commands on /2 private chat channel so you can control the lens the patient will see if they look through the device. For example, key "one" in the /2 channel and the clearest lens is used. Key "two" and a slightly less clear/darker lens is shown. You will also hear the classic sound of the lens change inside the device. At this point you can ask your patient, "This this lens better or worse?" or use whatever questioning series you wish. There are five lenses -- "one" is clearest, "two" is next, then "three", "four" and "five". So, begin your eye exams with lens "five" and work backward to "one" for best vision. Please note the lens differences are slight and call for close attention just the way you experience RL phoropters and refractors.
Out of the box the phoropter fits in a space that is 0.8 deep by 0.9 wide by 1.9 tall. I found this to be ideal but you can easily use touch to rescale as needed. It is made of my original mesh and has a land weight of 34. This may seem like a lot of weight but realize there are many details to the shape of the model in order to provide an authentic appearance and allow for various detailed and authentic textures to applied to many faces on the mesh.
Also included is the physician's looped animated examination stool. Position it near the phoropter to the right of the seated patient. I made a looped animation where you look to patient, then turn to point toward the Snellen chart in distance, then turn back to patient, then lean forward to adjust a phoropter dial, then look back to the patient. The land weight is 6 for the stool alone.
At present this item features only the colorization you see in my photos. It is a professional looking device and not a decor item, but let me know if you have a clinic with a special color scheme and I will be happy to provide you with a version that fits your clinic design.
I am delighted to meet and chat with customers and to adapt this item for you when I can. I often create animations and would be very interested in advancing style and types of animations or adding role play features. Please message me about new things you would like to see!
Have fun, mask up, and stay safe!
