This haircut encountered me for the first time in the ninja video-game "Tenchu - Wrath Of Heaven". First I've thought it was their invention, but then I saw it on a punk guy of a Japanese Anime-show, too! For that reason I've asked my best friend, who's pretty educated in Japanese topics and their theory is, that this is the result of dishonored samurais, which were forced to get rid off their ponytail completely. So those hairs on the side of their heads are the few remains and possibly therefore Japanese punks are wearing that look too sometimes?
