Psoriasis is an itchy skin condition that can can come and go throughout your life. Psoriasis causes the body to produce new skin cells in days rather than weeks. These cells accumulate on the skin's surface, producing thick and scaly patches that can be itchy and uncomfortable.
The cause of psoriasis is not fully understood. It is thought to be an issue with an overactive immune system where infection-fighting cells attack healthy skin cells by mistake. Researchers believe that both genetics and environmental factors play a role in the development of psoriasis. Stress can also lead to flare ups and worsening conditions.
Psoriasis is NOT contagious and can not be passed to others through contact. Only about 2% of people living in the United States have this condition.
