Lavishly decorated, this elegant set of furniture was commanded by the merchant-Mercier Darnault and made by Jean -Baptiste Tillard in 1778 for the furnishings of the Parisian mansion of the Comte de Gamaches, which upon the delivery of the pieces complained about the high price of them.
Made in carved and gilded wood the quality and refinement of the sculpture testify to the quality achieved by Parisian craftsmen during the second half of the 18th century. During this period, all craftsmanship was strictly ruled by guilds, so a different team of carpenters, sculptors, gilders, upholsterers without forgetting the work of the designer (usually an architect) were necessary for the realization of the most exquisite pieces, thus ensuring the highest standards, and consequently the highest price.
With a quality worthy of sovereigns the entire set was purchased in 1784 by the Royal furniture repository to furnish an apartment at the Chateau de Versailles for the Royal visit of Gustave III, King of Sweden.
Later on, the entire set plus an ensemble of matching chairs made by Boulard was sent to the Chateau de Compiegne to fit the library of Kind Louis XVI.
The fabric selected, "La Bouquetière et le Jardinier", one of the most expensive and elaborate silk lampas designed by Philippe de Lasalle at the end of the 18th century, is according to the historical records and researches the same design on which this furniture set would have been originally upholstered in its day. the fabric has been reconstituted from old archives for use in these models.
Currently exposed at the Grand Salon de Madame Victoire at the chateau de Versailles. Paris.
