A pair of George III urns in carved mahogany on pedestals.
Decorated with fluted gadroons, rosettes, and swirls with acanthus leaves. On a mahogany pedestal with a similar decorative repertory.
Popularized in England in the mid-18th century, these urns, used in dining rooms among the Georgian upper classes, represented the taste for antiquity of the period. As beautifully decorated as functional, being the vases hollow, lined with metal, and fitted with a tap, these were used to store water for rinsing the silverware or glasses during the curse of a dinner.
The base was also used to store cutlery, coa for the warming-dishes or other utensils necessary to be kept close.
c 1770.
Interactive, dispenses a glass of water when touched.
