Commode:

A large commode created by Joseph Stockel and completed by Benneman to furnish the room of Louis XVI at the Château de Compiègne.
Of generous proportions with curved ends, the commode is made of flamed mahogany, adorned with finely chiseled gilt bronze mounts. The upper frieze is decorated with floral garlands, the pilasters feature floral trophies, and the central plaque displays bows of arrows with two love doves. The piece is completed with lion paw feet and a white Carrara marble top.
A grand ceremonial piece commissioned for the Count of Provence (brother of Louis XVI) in 1787, it was later sold to the royal furniture guardian and transferred to Compiègne after the palace renovations of 1786. It was later moved to the bedroom of Louis XVI at the Palace of Versailles.
