Hang Drum SL Hang Drums are based on a real life musical instrument originally developed in 2000 in Switzerland. The manufacturer has since stopped creating the hang drum and therefore they are hard to find. In fact, they are so rare they are sometimes sold on Ebay for upwards of $6,000 each, and they sell. Also, you will find that the Hang Drum is very popular with over 17,500 results on YouTube for Hang Drum and some of those videos have millions of views. On Google there are over 22 million results.

The Hang Drum is a very unusual musical instrument made of a convexed hardened steel body originally developed for the construction of steel pans. On top of the Hang Drum is a central domed note called Ding surrounded by a circle of seven or eight tone fields. The lower half shell has a round resonant opening called Gu. The Hang Drum is played with the fingers and hands.

As I told you earlier, the Hang Drum is extremely popular and rare. Therefore we decided to create a virtual Hang Drum in SecondLife. Designed in the same style as the real life musical instrument, our store offers two different types of Hang Drum, a mark 1 and mark 2. The mark 1 is distinguishable by having 8 sections on its face and the mark 2 has 7 sections on its face. We have 3 different tone variations in each of our Hang Drums. The first is Slap, the slap Hang Drum has a deeper sound because it is a slap on each tone field of the Hang Drum. The second is Mid, the mid Hang Drum has a bright crisp sound because its a nip hit on the sweet spot of each tone field. The third is Edge, the edge Hang Drum is a nip on the edge of each tone field.

Instead of using your hands (unless you have a touchscreen monitor), the Hang Drum SL musical instrument is played with a left click on your mouse, this created a great sound that you will enjoy and if you are a performer will generate much attention. The scales are set a little differently than regular musical instruments since the scale of the Hang Drum goes from left to right as it rises up to the highest tone. We have included a diagram of how the Hang Drum SL hang drum scale works (above). As you can see the base tone is the lowest tone, we have decided to colour code it *black*. The *black* key is the first tone.

Learning To Play...

Drag your Hang Drum SL Hang Drum onto the floor. Then rotate the Hang Drum by right click > CTRL+rotate the Hang Drum so the *black* section is facing you. Click each tone field, centre and base tones several times to load the tones into your SecondLife client's memory and then you are ready to make music...
