A knot garden is a formal garden laid out in an intricate design defined by hedges. Knot gardens often include flowers or other foliage planted for color in the spaces between the hedges. These gardens have been popular features of gardens since the Renaissance period starting in the 16th century.
Throughout human history most people with some land near their homes have also kept "kitchen gardens" in which they cultivated herbs and plants for cooking and home medicinal purposes. Your knot garden is special because it is planted with a large selection of such herbs and plants, thereby combining the decorative features of a knot garden with the practical uses of a kitchen garden. There are 41 plants in all in this garden (though there are some duplicates).
