No one knows what caused the mysterious explosion at the Academy for Research and Scientific Exploration. Half a dozen fire crews were called to put out the resulting blaze. The police suspected arson, but no charges were ever brought. No one died, but for the 48 students who were working there that day, life changed forever.

Robin Richards and Rachel Rutherford were expects in resistivity, and were conducting final testing on an electrical shielding system with potential military applications. Their equipment became fused with their bodies, turning them into Rho, with the power to block attacks of all kinds.

The costume includes a simple HUD with four different shield types. To turn the shield on, click the green button. To turn it off, click the red button. Note that the first shield type, Movelock, is immediately active on wearing the HUD, whilst all the others are turned off.

Movelock simply holds you in place. It will not prevent you from walking, running or flying, but activates once you stop moving. If anyone bumps you, it will immediately snap you back into place. Please note that Movelock will also prevent you from using intra-sim teleport devices. You will need to deactivate it to use these.

If you are in a push-enabled sim, the Repulsor shield will gives anyone who bumps into you a hard push in a random direction. You will need to wear the Repulsor attachment for this to work. It remains invisible until someone bumps you.

Shield rezzes a large, free-standing prim sphere around you. Like the repulsor, this remains invisible until it detects an attempted attack, when it will briefly flash. The shield is temporary and will disappear after about a minute, or when you walk into it. The shield will block basic attacks by projectile weapons such as guns.

Non-phys will rez a "non-physical vehicle" (NPV) above your head. Click to sit on it. You can then use your arrow keys and PgUp/PgDn to move around. This is reputed to be the surest form of defence, since sitting on a prim renders you phantom and most attacks will simply pass straight through you. You can also pass straight through any prims. The NPV will delete itself when you stand.

Some of these shields were developed from freely available scripts, generously offered by their writers. I've just modified them a little to work with the HUD. I've left them full perm so you can check them out for yourselves. They should protect you from basic griefing attacks. They are not in any way guaranteed, and I'm quite sure that more advanced weapons will be able to defeat them. Apparently in SL weapons technology is always at least one step ahead of shields.
