The valetudinaria (plural of valetudinarium) were field hospitals or flying military camps[ and began as a small cluster of tents and fortresses dedicated to wounded soldiers, that provided insight into how the doctors managed the different wounds and diseases which allowed for the awareness into which herbs were good for certain medical uses.
Over time, the temporary forts developed into permanent facilities. The original hospitals were built along major roads, and soon became part of Roman fort architecture. They were usually placed near the outer wall in a quiet part of the fortification.
