Akai ito means "red thread" and it's a belief about a thread linking two people meant to be together.
It's very popular in many countries in Eastern Asia and the legend is of Chinese origin. Yuè Xià Lǎorén, the old lunar matchmaker god, ties a red cord around the ankle of two lovers - in Japanese and Korean cultures the thread goes around their pinky fingers), sentencing them to cross each other's paths one day or another. The thread can stretch or tangle, but can never break.
I decided to base my work on that legend for Yin/Yang's theme this September 15th: His & Hers. There is a bridge linking two bedrooms on the 2nd floor, which can be used to separate two lovers, as a couple originally didn't share accommodations in some cultures, save for times they sought each other to mate. It's a nice idea to use this building for twins or any other two siblings living with each other as well.
Take care!
