Organic. Maximalist. Art Nouveau.
When Fred hauled the vanity that looked like teak walking on tiptoes back to the studio, nobody batted an eye. Pretty, with inlaid wood details and the varnish still intact; only a few dings and scuffs, really, but for old pieces like this, it only added to the character. The smooth surface had seen some better days and shadows of long-used products created dark wells along that sun-bleached top. Dirt and dust accumulated along the edges of the tarnished mirror, and the glass itself barely reflected anymore; maybe squinting really, really hard would get you a glimpse of something. Charming. Hell, it even came with its original suede cushioned seat, the legs made of that iconic green wrought iron that framed the Paris Metro entrances.
Over the next week or so, more pieces of the same styling came through the studio doors. A decorative wall piece all glittering in brass, a rolled up rug that was just barely stained along the edges and with minimal dirt ground into the fibers emblazoned with off-white blooms. Some dusty bottles and makeup jars with varying levels of their original contents began to appear, lining the surface of the vanity and coincidentally fitting perfectly into those faded circles where they interfered with sunbeams finally reaching earth. All lined up, like a row of onlookers waiting for... something.
When the silvered tray made its way back to its home on the lacquered surface - fitting perfectly into the irregular blotch of a shadow on the right side - the mirror's face abruptly cleared as if someone heaved a hot breath onto fogged up glasses. The silvered backing reflected brilliantly, as well as the day it was first manufactured. It invites passerby to sit a spell, perhaps preen a little in that diamond finish.
But do take care not to peer too long at yourself in the vanity. It reflects the looker quite well. A little too well, maybe?
