ABOUT THIS ICON
John the Baptist, who baptized Jesus in the River Jordan, is also known as “the Forerunner”, who prepared the way of the Lord and first recognized him as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Although he appears in the New Testament, he is regarded as the last and greatest of the Old Testament saints, as Jesus himself said that, among mortals, there is none greater than John the Baptist. John is depicted in the Gospels wearing a garment of camel’s hair and living on locusts and wild honey. Interestingly, in many icons he is depicted with wings. This is not because he is regarded as an angel in the Christian sense. Yet the word ‘Angelos’ literally means “messenger”, and John was a messenger announcing the Gospel and identifying Jesus as Messiah. He is thus sometimes described in iconography as the “angel of the desert”.
