Abu had walked until the world thinned into stone and water. The forest gave way to a hollow where the river broke against the cliffs, and there he stopped. A waterfall poured like liquid starlight, pale against the black rock, its roar endless and patient.
He built his fire on the moss and leaned back, the weight of his pack pressing into his shoulders. The flames danced, whispering promises of warmth, their glow catching the tired lines of his face. Sleep crept in, soft but unrelenting, and Abu let it come.
Dreams pressed against him like mist. He saw figures in the spray of the falls, faces he knew but could not name. The fire’s crackle became a heartbeat, the river a hymn. The forest leaned closer, listening. Shadows stretched long as though eager to touch him.
In that fragile seam between waking and dream, Abu felt the land claim him—not as prey, not as stranger, but as something it had been waiting for. The fire would fade, the waterfall would endure, and his breath was just another rhythm stitched into the night.
When his head finally bowed and the world slipped away, it was no longer clear whether Abu was resting—or being carried into the embrace of the earth itself.
