Landknechts loved their swords with twisted guards. And as soon the technology and money allowed they ordered own daggers. Only half of the size of their loved Katzbalger, very dangerous in brawls it came also with fancy looking twisted guards.
With the time they discovered that such guard can push the liver pretty much hard so Landknechts started to remove half of the guard giving them more options in wearing and hiding such fine weapon.
