Beautiful Louis XVI bronze and brass sconce from the drawings of Jean Charles Delafosse (1734-1791) made in circa 1775. Richly carved and chiselled model. Under a fire pit urn with garlands of leaves and acorns of oak, two sconces carried by acanthus leaves and falls of laurel leaves. In the center a muzzle of lion very finely chiseled. Large cups with acanthus leaves support the chiseled binets of oves. The barrel is fluted, rudent asparagus tips and the whole ends with a bouquet of acanthus leaves.

By the mid-18th century, the ornamental schemes that had prevailed in the French decorative arts for several decades were being challenged. That movement, which was led by scholars and collectors, was influenced by the extraordinary archaeological discoveries made in the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, near Naples. Over the years, a handful of collectors, artists and artisans, went on to impose a new style that was directly inspired by Greek and Roman antiquity. That atmosphere of aesthetic effervescence formed the context within which the present wall lights were created. Their ornamental vocabulary, comprising scrolling, oak leaf garlands, and flaming antique vases, is characteristic of the finest Parisian creations of the late 1760s and the early portion of the following decade. It was inspired by the drawings of contemporary designers, including Jean-Charles Delafosse, who did an engraving that relates to the design of the present wall light.
