MAIRA or Maera (Sparkling, marmairô) was the Naiad of the dog-star Seirios whose rising in conjunction with the sun brought on the scorching heat of midsummer. Like the Pleiades and Hyades, Maira was a starry daughter of the Titan Atlas. She married a mortal king, the Arkadian Tegeates, the son of Lycaon. Her tomb was shown both at Tegea and Mantineia in Arcadia. Pausanias thinks that she was the same as the Maera whom Odysseus saw in Hades.
According to another myth, Maira was one of THE ERASINIDES ( Byze, Melite, Maira and Anchiroe). The Erasinides were four Naiads of the River Erasinos in Argolis (southern Greece). They welcomed the goddess Britomartis into their country when she arrived from Krete (Crete).
According to another tale of the kind , a certain MAIRA, daughter of Proitos, was shot by Artemis for ceasing to attend the hunt after she was seduced by Zeus. She was evidently not killed immediately since she survived to give birth to her child, a son Lokros who helped Zethos and Amphion in the building of Thebes. Such is her story as imperfectly transmitted in a brief summary of an account by Pherecydes; it may have been very ancient since Homer includes a Maira among the famous women who were seen by Odysseus in the Underworld.
