ABOUT THIS ICON
Maximus the Confessor (580-662), also known as Maximus the Theologian and Maximus of Constantinople, was a monk and scholar. One of the greatest of the post-Nicene Fathers of the Eastern Church, is works make up a substantial portion of the great collection of Orthodox spiritual writings known as the Philokalia, and he is venerated both the Eastern and Western Churches. He is one of the few Saints who has two feast days, 13 August and 21 January. The title “Confessor” indicates that he was persecuted for his views (in this case for supporting the orthodox Chalcedonian formula that Jesus had both a human and a divine will against a heresy known as Monotheletism), but not martyred.
