NEW TESTAMENT TRINITY
This is a reproduction of an icon of the Holy Trinity. It is one of our “decorative” or “mute” icons — it is merely a reproduction of an image, as opposed to our “talking” icons, which display quotes from Scripture when touched.
Our icons are created for private use and display in churches and other places in SL. They should not be resold or adapted for resale. Their size and position can be modified. Copy and Transfer permissions depend upon the particular version of the icon purchased.
ABOUT THIS ICON
The Doctrine of the Trinity is one of the central tenets of orthodox Christianity, but is also regarded as one of the mysteries of the faith: that God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit are three distinct persons, yet a single God. If this idea is difficult to grasp, it is also difficult to depict. Icons of the Trinity depict the three Persons. There are two basic forms of such icons. One, sometimes called the “Old Testament Trinity,” depicts each of the three Persons in human form, around a table or altar. This depiction is linked to the visitation of the “three men” to Abraham and Sarah in Genesis, when they were camped at Mamre. (They are often interpreted as not being mere human beings, but either as angels or as the three Persons of the Trinity.). The other, the “New Testament Trinity,” draws upon imagery from the New Testament: God the Father enthroned in Heaven with Jesus seated enthroned at his right hand, with the Holy Spirit depicted as a dove. In most such icons, there are also representations of angels (particularly the Cherubim and Seraphim that are described as dwelling in the presence of God and sometimes the Archangels Michael and Gabriel). Some icons additionally depict Saints (also seen before the Divine throne in Revelation) and symbols of the four Evangelists. In some, Mary (the mother of Jesus, the Theotokos) and John the Baptist (the Forerunner) are also depicted.
This icon is labeled “Co-Enthronement Icon” at Wikimedia commons, where it is identified as probably dating from the 19th century and residing in Tula, Russia, and as being in the public domain. We found this among the New Testament Trinity icons described at https://russianicons.wordpress.com/tag/cherubim/ .
