HISTORICAL INFORMATION:

The original Red Brick Store was constructed in Nauvoo in 1841 and was owned by Joseph Smith, the prophet of the restoration movement (aka Mormon Church).

The building became a center of economic, political, religious, and social activity among the Latter Day Saints. In addition to being a mercantile store, the second floor of the building also served as the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for a period of time.

The ground floor served as a store, while the first floor served as a room for public meetings. Here the Women's Relief Society was formed and several key church ordinances where first performed.

After the untimely death of Joseph Smith at the hands of a mob in 1844, most members of the restoration church left Nauvoo, with the vast majority emmigrating to Salt Lake under Brigham Young.

The Red Brick Store together with most of Nauvoo came into the hands of the utopian community of the Icarians until they too left Nauvoo in 1856. The store then went into disrepair was was eventually demolished.

In 1980 a 1:1 replica of this building was constructed in Nauvoo where it still stands today as a store and tourist attraction ran by the Community of Christ (which is another branch of the wider restoration churches).
