Long after the battles were over, an old shield once used by Orcs lay forgotten behind a campfire ring, half-buried in ash and bones.
It was cracked, scorched, and dented in the exact shape of a hero who had tried way too hard. Every mark told a story: axes blocked, arrows snapped, and one bite mark from an Orc who thought it was bread. (It was not.)
One night, raiders crept into the valley. The Orcs grabbed shiny new weapons… except one small Orc, who picked up the old shield instead. It rattled. It groaned. It remembered.
When the fighting started, the shield held fast. Blades slid off. Arrows broke. The Orc stood laughing behind it, untouched, while the raiders fled in confusion.
By morning, the old shield rested proudly by the fire again—ugly, heavy, and undefeated.
The Orcs nodded in respect.
Some things don’t rust. They just wait.
