This is a modern version of the traditional japanese tokonoma (alcove). Originally they were used as shrines, but these days they are used as an art display case and are in the formal living/dining area.
There are 2 black lacquer with gold trim and a gold leaf tree motif tokonomas in the range, a right hand side and a left hand side (this one). The open side of the tokonoma traditionally is against the wall and the solid side faces into the room.
The scroll is owner only menu driven and is modifiable to enable you to put your own artwork into the scroll. There are 3 default textures so you can see how it works.
It comes with full instructions for use.
