"PDA" stands for "Personal Defense & Assistant (Unit)" and 482 is an incremental manufacturing batch number. A single batch of PDAs ranges from 3000 to 5000 units.
These units are generally assigned as either personal bodyguards or for more secretary support roles for high value individuals. They are also be seen at police and military training programs for the purpose of demonstrating proper conduct with civillians and de-escalation tactics.
While PDAs were originally one of the top choices in professional settings for menial tasks, over time the companion market became fiercely competitive and forced these units to be expanded into military sectors. The increased demand was a blessing and a curse; the maintenance for these units was not designed with military wear in mind and compromising changes had to be made to reduce cost and time out of service.
The past reputation of PDAs holds strong, they are often seen as status symbols despite their new flaws. Their current "universal chassis" is a mix of affordable parts to keep costs down for civillian use, and a durable but rudimentary design so they can be serviced by field technicians between combat operations. The diversified task demands have reduced the quality control on PDA software for professional use.
