Introduction
Qin dynasty (221–206 BC)
In the spring of 1974, farmers digging a well in the eastern suburbs of Xi'an, Shaanxi Province China, were startled to discover an intact terracotta head. From there acheologists began to unearth an astonishing scene - a cavemous vault containing an entire army of warriors meant to guard the Emperor Qin Shi Huang as he made his journey into the afterlife.
There are four main pits associated with the terracotta army. This Armored Infantryman is the major military unit in Terracotta Army and is found in Pit two along with cavalry units and is thought to represent a military guard. Pit one has 11 corridors that is designed for the tombs of noblemen and would have resembled palace hallways. Pit three is the command post, with high ranking officers and a war chariot. Pit four is empty, seemingly left unfinished by its builders.
