The PAR 56 lights use "projected" light. These are true "spot lights" and require Advanced Lighting Model to be enabled in your viewer to see the full effect.
(Without Advanced Lighting Model enabled they function as the lights you are accustomed to, throwing light omni-directionally.)

The Diffused Spot w/Gel also uses projected light. These lights casts shadows.

The tripod mounted Shuttered Spot/Flood is a combination of prim point light and projected light making it ideal as a background highlight or reflected fill (e.g. off the ceiling). This light casts mild shadows and provides some soft fill light as well.

The umbrella and parchment diffused lights are traditional "prim point lights". These are ideal as fill lights, softening the shadows that can sometimes be too harsh.

■ Key (main) Lighting: PAR 56 lights:
The key light does not have to directly illuminate the subject: it may pass through various filters, screens, or reflectors (e.g. GOBO templates). Commonly they are used to generate colors by fitting them with colored sheets called gels. Without a color gel our PAR 56s also make an ideal key light for portraiture. They offer an infinite combination of color and intensity making them an ideal chice for key (main) lighting. These lights cast shadows.

■ Fill Lighting: Umbrella Lights and Diffused Flood:
Diffusing artificial light using umbrella styled apparatus has been employed by photographers since the beginning of the 20th century. Reflective umbrellas have been documented to be an essential part of the well equipped "modern" photo studio from as early as 1918. This century old technique is well proven and remains in popular use today.

Umbrellas with a reflective inside are used by photographers as a diffusion device when employing artificial lighting, most often in portrait and fashion photography. A very common example of this technique is the traditional umbrella reflector, typically having a gold, silver or matte white interior onto which a lamp fitted with a circular reflector is projected, providing a broad, soft illumination. The lamp faces away from the scene to be photographed, allowing only reflected light to be thrown forward.

Some umbrellas are "shoot-through" umbrellas, meaning the light goes through the umbrella and is diffused, rather than reflecting off the inside of the umbrella; the lamp faces the subject. (A shoot-through lamp is provided in this package.)
