In 2391, the Xanadu class runabout was developed in response to renewed Federation expansion into unexplored sectors of the galaxy. The Dominion and Borg threats had been dealt with, and Starfleet had once again recovered enough to focus on 'seeking out' and 'boldly going'. Xanadu class ships were fully capable of performing thorough initial surveys and reconnaissance missions, paving the way for more extended missions by large explorer-type starships.
The Xanadu is equipped with many advanced sensor systems. A large sensor pod tops the ship's rollbar. It is able to carry a crew of eight, though four is more typical.
