The raised fist symbol was first used in 1917 in union actions by the Industrial Workers of the World, and then popularized during the Spanish Civil War as an antifascist symbol of solidarity, strength, and defiance. It's been used in many uprisings and civil rights movements since then; here it is merged with the Progressive Pride Flag, introduced by Daniel Quasar in 2018, to include the identities and populations onto the Rainbow Pride Flag that have been underrepresented in the past: brown and black for people of color, pink and pale blue for transgender, and white for agender, non-binary, and other non-gender-conforming people.
