This gesture, known as the corna — Italian for “horn” - was first used by Coven's in 1969 debut "Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls". The corna is visible on their album cover and was intended to spread the word of Satan.
Ronnie James Dio, himself admitted he was not the first using this gesture.
Actually, the use of this gesture in italy means either a superstitious sign (like James Dio's grandma did) or to insult someone as betrayed in love.
