ARMY ONE livery for the S-58 Shergood Aviation helicopter
An upgrade from the H-19 Chickasaw, the CH-34 Choctaw first took flight in March of 1954. Designed as a troop/cargo transport with internal and external lift capacity, its efficiency and reliability made its selection for an experimental flight detachment a no-brainer. Starting in 1957, under President Eisenhower, several CH-34s were converted by Sikorsky to VH-34s for a Presidential Flight detachment. With flotation devices, upgraded landing gear, flight stabilization program, soundproofing, upholstered seats, carpeting, and telephone communications system for the president, the VH-34 was the standard of luxury for its time. Eventually replaced by the CH-3A, the mission of flying the president would be shared for 18 years with the Marine Corps before being taken over completely by the Marines in 1976.
VH-34C 57-1725 began life as an H-34A before being converted. This aircraft served President Kennedy until it was replaced and transferred to the Virginia National Guard. It would be retired and sent to Davis Monthan AFB before being transferred to the Transportation Museum
