Sevres Potpourri vase

A potpourri vase is a specifically designed for holding potpourri. In the traditional designs, a potpourri container is provided with a pierced fitted lid, through which the scent may slowly diffuse.
This porcelain vase was made by the Royal Manufactory in Sèvres, and takes the form of a cup-shaped urn with holes in the lid. The vase is designed for making compositions from dried flowers. Its large, hemispherical body rests on a multi-stage stand with a circular cross-section, based on a square with bevelled corners. At the top, the body turns into a wide, grooved neck, with gilded ornaments, topped by a dome with a handle in the form of a bunch of grapes. The vessel is richly decorated with paintings and relief forms shaped in a mass of porcelain. The edges of the base, the stand and the body, as well as the contours of acanthus leaves decorating the lid, are gilded. The fluting is highlighted by a gilded ornament consisting of floral tendrils and a string of laurel leaves in the fluting’s grooves, as well as on the edge surrounding the fluting. The vessel is decorated with a colorful, hand-painted composition of flower bouquets. The paintings on the front and the back have been made skillfully and accurately.
