Intelligent email-enabled multi-segment display board.
===================================

What I have created here is a six-segment display board out of 10 prims.
Each of the segments can be loaded with an image that is then displayed on the front face and a notecard which can, optionally, be given out to passers when they touch the segment.

Now, have you been tending to business in RL when you suddenly realise you need to get a message into SL, or for whatever reason you cannot log-in but are able to send an email?

What is different about this display board, and the reason that I originally created it, is that you can also send each segment an email message that is displayed above it (floating text).

There are many possible uses for this functionality. Here are a few that I have had discussions about.

- In a role-play SIM
Each segment could hold an image of the main characters with the floating text acting like a personal blog, updated by email as and when needed. The optional notecard could hold further information not needing such frequent updates.
If the SIM has an ongoing storyline, each segment could be a chapter in this story to allow people to quickly catch up with what has been going on. The notecard could hold historic information while the floating text accepts news flashes or other updates.

- In a shop
In a shop the segments could display different classes of goods and the owners could email in update for future sales or discounts.

- In a club
In a club or other establishment, each segment could represent a member of staff. The notecard could, optionally, advertise their services. The floating text could be used for customer reviews or other messages.

You can probably think of other uses as well.
If you have an idea but this particular display board does not quite fit the bill, I am happy to talk about commissions.

Now here is the owners manual for those who are interested.

The email address for the display board
---------------------------------------
In SL each object has an unique ID. The email address you need to use to send messages to the display is this value @lsl.secondlife.com. The ID is a long string of numbers which is shown to the user when the display is rezzed, reset or the show email option is chosen from the owner options. Due to the way SL works, this unique ID, and therefore the email address, changes every time the object is rezzed. So it is IMPORTANT to make a note of the new email address every time this happens. Once rezzed the email address will not change, even if the display is move, altered or reset.

How to correctly format an email message
----------------------------------------
The "To" field in the email message needs to be the email address of the display, the long-number @lsl.secondlife.com as described above.
e.g. 7d3e52ee-18b2-ba4f-7994-7c17b966ff61@lsl.secondlife.com

The "Subject" line is the most critical to get right as it defines which display segment the email gets sent to. The line MUST start with a number (1-6) followed by a space.
1 - sends message to the top-left pane
2 - sends message to the top-middle pane
3 - sends message to the top-right pane
4 - sends message to the bottom-left pane
5 - sends message to the bottom-middle pane
6 - sends message to the bottom-right pane
Everything after the space ends up as the title above the message.

The "Body" of the email message can be any text you want. Please note that in SL there are limits on message lengths so please don't complain if you send the complete works of Shakespeare and it does not work ;-) To prevent the text above the display segment getting too long there is another SL limit of about 200 characters. To overcome this the email message is split into "panes", each pane being 3-lines of 10-words. This prevents the text above the segments looking messy and keeps within the SL limits. When an email is received the owner and the sender (by return email) is sent a message informing them of this.

Example email message:
Subject: 6 This is a test
Body: This message will be shown in the bottom-right segment.

Adding images and notecards to the individual segments.
To add an image to a segment the owner can drag and drop a texture from your inventory directly onto the chosen segment while holding down the CTRL key. The owner will get a message confirming this. If there is more than one image in the segments inventory then the first will be used (sorted alpabetically).
You can also add an image by editing the display, selecting "edit linked parts" and then selecting the chosen segment. You can now just drag a texture from your inventory to the segment inventory. The owner will get the same message confirming with image has been used.
Notecards should also be added in this way.
