For a good performance to see mesh items also from a bit of a distance Please set your RenderVolumeLodfactor on at least 4. Preferable is to set it on 8.
You do that in the ADVANCED MENU (Ctrl Alt D). Go to debug settings. Fill in the box RenderVolumeLodFactor and change the number into at 4 or higher.
