ABOUT ICONS
Icons are stylized representations of Christ, the Saints, episodes in Holy History, and other Biblical themes. They are used in devotion by Eastern Orthodox Christians, Oriental Orthodox Christans, and Christians in the Churches of the East. Unlike much Western religious art, they do not aim at realistic depictions, but images that attempt to bring us in touch with spiritual realities. They are sometimes described as “windows into heaven” (hence the name of our brand). They are neither simply works of art nor things to be worshipped as idols, but vehicles through which God can communicate something of the Divine Mysteries to the human soul. As such, the Orthodox view them as sacred objects to be venerated (but, again, not worshipped).
There are icons that depict Christ, the Saints, episodes in the Bible and in Christian history, and other basic Christian themes. These various themes, or MOTIFS, have been painted (or “written”) by many iconographers. The style of many of the motifs is highly stylized, so that there is a great deal of resemblance between, say, different icons of the Crucifixion or Resurrection.
ABOUT THIS ICON
The original for this image is not technically an icon, but a painting in the School of Siena, by Simone Martini (1284-1344). This image is in public domain. More information can be found at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Simone_Martini_003.jpg
This icon depicts St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430), one of Western Christianity’s greatest theologians and philosophers, and Bishop of Hippo Regius in North Africa. Several of his works are still widely read, including the CONFESSIONS, THE CITY OF GOD, and ON THE TRINITY.
Augustine lived in Numidia in North Africa, then a part of the Roman Empire. Before his conversion to Christianity, he lived what he later came to consider a profligate lifestyle. Throughout this time, however, he was deeply interested in philosophy, and explored first Manicheanism and then Neo-Platonism. His eventual rejection of Manicheanism figures prominently in his writing, as does the more lasting influence of Platonic thought, as Augustine is regarded as one of the more important proponents of a Christian Platonism. He helped to formulate the doctrine of Original Sin and wrote one of the most influential works on the doctrine of the Trinity. His writings greatly influenced the Early Medieval worldview, and he is recognized as a saint and a Doctor of the Church by both the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches, though his theology is more controversial among the Eastern Orthodox. Many of the Protestant Reformers, such as Martin Luther (who was himself a monk in the Augustinian Order), looked to Augustine’s theology as an alternative to the Late Medieval synthesis of the Roman Catholic Church in their day. His works are frequently taught in both theology and philosophy courses, and include important ideas about such topics as free will and just war theory as well as theology.
