I was working on a project where I needed to test multiple textures, but wasn't able to directly link to my local file. A friend gave me a script that should have let me put a texture on an object, then have the object tell me the UUID of my local file but didn't. That gave me the starting point to go find and mod a script so that it would work for me.
To save you the time of having to track that down, I'm putting it here. It's also full perms, so feel free to share it or mod it.
