El Templo egipcio era la casa de un dios, por lo que tanto el lugar de su construcción y su orientación como los materiales utilizados se elegían cuidadosamente, ya debía ser una construcción perdurable. Todos sus elementos, materiales, decoración, inscripciones, etc. eran simbólicos.

Dentro de los templos había una imagen del dios tutelar, ante la cual el faraón o los sacerdotes oficiaban el ritual sin que el pueblo lo presenciara, a éste solo le estaba permitido acceder a algunas salas, en cuyo exterior se esculpía un relieve con el ave rejit.
Existian varios tipos de templos
Templo consagrado a uno o más dioses.
Oficiales: en los que oficiaba el faraón o sus sacerdotes y que representaban la religión oficial.
Santuarios populares: mostraban la devoción popular a un dios, ante el que se dejaban ofrendas y ex votos.
Templo funerario del faraón, en el que se desarrollaban los ritos funerarios, como la apertura de la boca. Antes de que las tumbas se ocultasen para protegerlas, tenían dos templos: el funerario y el del Valle.
Cenotafio, templos mortuorios secundarios, levantados sobre todo, aunque no solamente, por los faraones que construyeron tumbas secretas.

En estas construcciones rendimos homenaje a los cenotafios.

Un cenotafio es una tumba vacía, ó monumento funerario erigido en honor de una persona, o grupo de personas, para los que se desea guardar un recuerdo especial. Se trata de una edificación simbólica. La palabra deriva del griego kenos cuyo significado es "vacío" y taphos que significa "tumba".

A cenotaph is an empty tomb or monument erected in honor of a person or group of persons, for which you want to save special memories. It is a symbolic building. The word derives from the Greek kenos meaning "empty" and taphos "grave."
