The Book of Kells is the most recognized and most remarkable artifact of medieval Celtic art. A stunningly beautiful manuscript containing the Four Gospels, completed in about 800AD. It is Ireland's most precious medieval artifact, and is generally considered the finest surviving illuminated manuscript to have been produced in medieval Europe.

It was a labor of love bringing this divine relic inworld. 33 different pages are contained within. Most are full pages, but added are a half dozen detail pages, and two pages of beautiful script in latin, essential to get a grasp of just how minute the workmanship is. This is definitely artwork you’ll want to zoom in on, and will never tire of. Bound beautifully in gold and jewels.
The book includes sounds upon opening, closing, and page turns. When opened, clicking the left side closes the book. Clicking the right side brings you to the next splendorous image.
It features page after page of lavish, colorful lettering, illumination, decoration and intricate illustration.
This is most elaborate manuscript of its kind to survive from the early Middle Ages. It was commonly believed for a time that it was created by angels.The workmanship is so fine that some of the details can only be clearly seen with a magnifying glass.
The scribes and artists who created the Book of Kells were monks who lived in a monastery on the remote island of Iona, off the west coast of Scotland.
Its long history includes being stolen in a Viking raid when it’s cover made of gold and gems was torn off ,was never recovered, and it had suffered some water damage.For a time it was taken for safekeeping by the Roman Catholic Church. In the 17th century it was returned to Ireland where it resides today in Dublin.

a labor of love
much like the artists who illuminated these manuscripts in the first place, the creator had to've put a TON of time and effort into making this!! I went to see the Book of Kells (under glass, of course) as a kid, and I've been fascinated by it ever since. as for the item itself, it's definitely very "old school" compared to the ludicrously artistic high-quality meshes the kids are making for Second Life these days. still, it's a thrill to flip through these images and pretend like I'm finally reaching through that regal glass display case...! also, I'm very grateful for the scripted resizing. it's thoughtful little touches like those that really make the difference. thank you!!
