Arguably the masterpiece for which Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) is best known, it was finished in 1642 and became one of the most works of the Dutch Golden Age. It is famous for three things: its size (12x14.3 feet), the dramatic use of light and shadow (tenebrism) and the perception of motion in what was essentially a group portrait.
