Daniel Hopfer (1470-1536) was a German artist believed to be the first to use etching in printmaking, at the end of the 15th century. He was the son of a painter. Her married Justina Grimm and and had three sons, two of whom -- Hieronymus and Lambert, were also painters. The two sons of his third son, Jorg, became famous etchers, were patronized by Emperor Maximillian II.
The much-feared Mamelukes were the ruling military caste in Ottoman Egypt for centuries, until they were massacred by the viceroy, Muhammad Ali, in 1811.
