How to line up the shadow map on Cuff II AO map
estrella llena estrella llena estrella llena estrella llena estrella vacía Publicado June 14, 2019 por SirDraconis

These trousers have some issues, explained below, but I gave them four stars because there are not many full perm clothing designs available for men, and the shape is cool and creative so it earned an extra star.

There are three faces: the sash belt, the right leg, and the left leg. On the left leg (viewing from avatar's point of view), the "Cuff II AO map" does not line up unless you adjust the texture rotation and offset.

I found the correct settings: Rotation: 22.5 degrees, Horizontal offset: 0.966, Vertical offset: 0.935. The creator should have included a notecard telling you how to align the texture. I almost trashed the set before I realized the texture simply needed to be rotated and offset to fit. I assume the creator has that leg rotated differently in order to maximize the area used in the 1024x1024 graphic.

The included shadow maps are decent, although I wish the creator had included a shadow under the collar-like sash at the waist. Doing it by trial and error is a lot harder than doing it with 3D software when you create the 3D model. (In addition to the ambient occlusion shadows, you would need to position some lights and get regular shadows too in your unwrap map.)

If you are hoping to use a patterned texture, be warned - it will not look good. This is because the texture is severely distorted in one area. Only one or two pixels are stretched to fit across the baggy expanse of fabric between the legs. With so few pixels to work with, there is no way to adjust the pattern to make it look good. This flaw is almost unnoticeable if you use a smooth solid texture. The sash does not have this problem, so it will take pattern and details much better than the legs.
