Wonderful Empire handwoven rectangular wool rug with complex decorations.
Historians seem to have an ambivalent opinion of Napoleon Bonaparte: some hate him, some love him. Apart from our personal opinions, we can't deny the influence his campaigns had on western art, in particular on furniture. To run an Empire in a country that just tasted the sweet fruit of Égalité, he understood that he had to transcend the mere role of traditional monarch to become something more, something everyone could understand: an ideal. He reformed everything, shaping the country and its coutumes, and art as well: interiors changed radically, like everything else, into a form of celebration of the Emperor and his victories. This rug is an embroidered testament of that splendour: from the N in the center medallion to the bees, a tribute to the Merovingian symbol that in the later centuries became the well-known symbol of the French monarchy, the fleur-de-lys.
