PANTOCRATOR ICON — ST. CATHERINE’S SINAI
This is a 1 prim icon. (It is a SIMPLE or “mute” icon — unlike our “talking” icons it does not display quotes when touched. A “talking” version of this icon is also available in our Marketplace store. See link at bottom of NC.) The image is based upon an icon of Christ Pantocrator from the Monastery of St Catherine, Sinai. The size can be modified by the user to fit into whatever location you choose. (COPY, NO TRANSFER). 1 prim, LI=1.
SIMPLE VS TALKING ICONS
In addition to simple prim icons like this one we also produce a smaller number “talking icons”. These display quotes in local chat when clicked. Due to the limitations of the SL scripting language, these are SHORT quotes, limited to 255 characters. To the best of our knowledge, quotes are either in public domain or are of a length covered under fair use laws.
ABOUT THIS ICON
This icon is based upon one of the oldest known icons, located at St. Catherine’s Monastery, Sinai. It dates from the sixth century CE. The original icon is considered remarkable, not only because of its compelling appearance and age, but also because it survived attacks upon Christian relics over so many centuries.
One of the striking features of this depiction of Jesus is the difference between the two eyes. Some have noted that there is a similar difference between the eyes as displayed on the Shroud of Turin. To some, this has suggested that one might be based upon the other. (Close examination of the image on the shroud suggests that one “eye” in fact has a Roman coin placed upon it, which some investigators see as an indicator of the authenticity of the Shroud.)
