Spooning dates back to the 16th century in Wales. When courting a woman, men weren't permitted to do anymore than talk to their betrothed. Often bored, they would carve spoons from a single piece of wood, which would be given to his bride on their wedding day. Today it is considered folk art, although welsh brides often include the love spoon in their weddings.
